Go back to where it all began with Classic Connelly Books

Learn all about the new special edition Michael Connelly books.

We are counting down the days until May when Michael Connelly returns to Australia for the first time in 5 years. To celebrate we are releasing special Classic Connelly editions of The Black Echo, The Poet, Blood Work, The Lincoln Lawyer and The Late Show – the books that started it all.

When we asked Michael to choose his favourite books (out of the 38 that he has written) he came back with each of the books that introduced his iconic characters: reporter Jack McEvoy, lawyer Mickey Haller, criminal profiler for the FBI Terry McCaleb and LAPD detectives Renée Ballard and Harry Bosch.

Each classic edition also includes a new introduction written by Michael Connelly.

Go back to where it all began with Classic Connelly’s.

The book that introduced the now legendary Harry Bosch to the world.

The Black Echo

LAPD detective Harry Bosch gets a call-out: a body has been found in a drainage tunnel off Mulholland Drive in Hollywood, and it looks like a routine drug overdose. But one new puncture wound amid the scars of old tracks leaves Bosch with questions. Worse, Harry Bosch recognises the victim. Billy Meadows was a fellow 'tunnel rat' in Vietnam, running against the Viet Cong and the fear they all used to call the Black Echo. Haunted by the memory of once failing his comrade, Bosch is determined to avoid doing so again. This time justice is personal.

The book that introduced the tenacious Jack McEvoy to the world.

The Poet

Crime reporter Jack McEvoy thought he was familiar with death, but when he's notified of his brother's suicide he is blindsided. Devastated, McEvoy decides to write a feature on police suicides, only to discover a sinister pattern of literary references across reports from various jurisdictions. Jack realises he may have unearthed a deviously hidden killer and made himself the next target. But determined to achieve justice, Jack commits himself to the pursuit. Little does he know what twisted paths lie ahead.

The book that introduced the driven Terry McCaleb to the world.

Blood Work

Ex-FBI profiler Terry McCaleb called his old job of hunting down serial killers 'blood work'. Nowadays the only blood work he cares about is for his heart transplant. Eight weeks ago, he was dead; now someone else's heart keeps him alive. Then Terry is informed that the anonymous donor of his heart was a murder victim and remains the focus of a stalled police investigation. Unable to ignore evil, even if it means risking his new life, McCaleb is inexorably drawn to help close the case. But someone is watching his every move—someone who has killed before and will kill again.

The book that introduced the cynical Mickey Haller to the world.

The Lincoln Lawyer

Defence lawyer Mickey Haller works out of his Lincoln Town Car, travelling between the far-flung courthouses of Los Angeles to defend clients of every kind: bikers, con artists, drunk drivers, drug dealers. For him, the law is rarely about guilt or innocence, it's about negotiation and manipulation. When a Beverly Hills playboy is arrested for brutally beating a woman, Mickey has his first high-paying client in years—a defence lawyer's dream—and it's looking like the easiest case of his career. But when murder is committed and manipulation threatens to bury the truth, justice depends on whether Haller is willing to risk everything.

The book that introduced the dauntless Renée Ballard to the world.

The Late Show

Young LAPD detective Renée Ballard has been relegated to the 'Late Show' after filing a sexual harassment complaint against her supervisor. Working in a twilight world of tragedy and violence, Ballard never gets closure, each morning forced to turn her cases over to the day shift detectives. But one night she's called out to a brutal assault and then to a multiple murder, and she's determined not to relinquish these cases at dawn. Working by day while maintaining her shift by night—against orders and her own partner's wishes—Ballard finds herself drawn deep into the dark heart of her city, her department and her past.
