Poppy’s Tips For New Mums - Special Delivery

Poppy from Leesa Ronald's Special Delivery shares some tips for new mums!

Special Delivery by Leesa Ronald

Returning to her hometown in rural NSW, pregnant and jobless, Poppy struggles with loneliness, being a new mum, and having an unhelpful ex. But as she repeatedly crosses paths with James, her gruff midwife, she begins to uncover unexpected support and learns that letting go of the past can open the door to new beginnings.

Check out 5 tips below from Special Delivery heroine Poppy for real life new mums out there!

1. Trust your gut.

Other people may have been parents for longer than you, or have been around babies more than you, but you’re the only mum of your child. In this regard, you are the expert.

2. Ignore the dumb advice.

Similar to the above, but it’s worth being explicit on this one. People will try to tell you kids need to eat with a knife and fork by age one, but they are deluded. Many of your parents’ generation will insist their kids could count to ten by eight months, and were eating with silver cutlery at age eleven months. These are outright lies and misrememberings. Feel free to ignore them.

3. Mother’s group can be so much better than you think.

Yes there will inevitably be people with trendier (cleaner) clothes than you, but guess what? They are probably feeling just as lost as you are. And if they’re not, they might funny or kind or generous or generally calm to the point their presence has a soothing effect on your soul. Mother’s Groups are a melting pot of personalities and chances are, there will be someone there you connect with.

4.  Accept your screen time use may skyrocket.

Ignore the guilt. Feeding in the middle of the night can be very boring. You know what make can make it more fun? TikTok. (Especially the Paul Mescal content.)

5.  Don’t try and be a hero.

No-one gives you a medal if you parent like a boss, so why not take it easy? Enjoy the cuddles, enjoy the walks, enjoy the coffees, enjoy the scrolling. In some cases, the old people are right (it does go quickly) so make sure you enjoy the ride.
