The Summer Read of 2024

Its not sad girl era, its mad girl era

When I first started at A&U, there was one novel on everyone’s lips, Green Dot by Madeleine Gray. On the surface, the book may seem like it’s simply about an ill-advised workplace affair, but after reading it, I can safely tell you the novel has more layers than even Shrek has.

This is an adult contemporary novel about our protagonist Hera Stephen, a woman in her mid-twenties who feels like everyone around her is winning in life, while she’s been a bit left behind. Cue not one of her brightest ideas, when she decides to pursue a relationship, with a married man… who is also a coworker. Hera falls headfirst into a workplace romance that everyone, including her, knows is doomed to fail.

The first thing I fell in love with in this book was the writing style. Madeline writes in a way that makes you feel like Hera is a friend spilling all the tea over brunch and its perfect mix of hilarious and relatable for someone also in their mid-twenties.

On top of that, the book is unabashedly real and funny, with SO many laugh out loud moments that balances so perfectly with the quieter moments too.

The novel has everything you want when kicking back by the pool and immersing yourself in a story that you will no doubt devour in 2 sittings like I did.

If this wasn’t enough to convince you, the brilliant crew at Shameless podcast love this book almost as much as I do! So, go check out their episode on Green Dot here, and I guarantee, your next step will be pressing add to cart!

Happy reading!
